DAVE GATLEY – Photojournalist
Dave Gatley is an independent photojournalist who has worked assignments literally around the world. Based in the southwestern corner of the United States, his skills and reputation necessitate his travel all over the country and overseas for “hard-news” organizations, Corporate-clients, the US Military and other US Government Agencies.
Dave has been a professional photographer for over 39 years and the former Chief Photographer with the Los Angeles Times, working there some 18 years, with another 21 years, as a freelance Commercial / Editorial photographer. Prior to the LA Times, Dave worked 8 years as a senior computer programmer & analyst with The RAND Corporation specializing in military logistics, weapon systems and large government databases.
Nationally recognized as an award winning photojournalist, being nominated for the Pulitzer Prize three times, he has served hundreds of international and domestic news magazines, newspapers and has been published in over three-dozen books. A new photo book: Naval Special Warfare – US Navy SEALs, is due July 2011; Published by US Naval Institute.
Few photographers working today have had the breadth of experience covering current events, natural or man-made disasters marking cultural and historical milestones. Few in his field have the technical background or the working experiences. He has brought Digital Photography and Digital Imaging Solutions consultation, design, direction and implementation to the Digital Archiving Project with the Zoological Society of San Diego (ZSSD) and that of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) where he set up a News Photo Desk operation while working as Lead Photographer for FEMAs National Emergency Response Team (ERT-N).
Dave’s assignments have taken him to nearly every US state and over 30 countries numerous times. To date, he has completed dozens of tours into the war-torn Middle Eastern countries of Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. In addition, he’s had many others assignments throughout Western Europe, and the Western Pacific.
Some of his commercial and corporate clients include General Motors, General Dynamics, ITT, Lockheed, Motorola, Pacific Bell, Panasonic, Raytheon, SD Zoological Society (SD Zoo), and numerous pharmaceutical companies.
His accomplishments have included Board & Vice President of both the Los Angeles & San Diego Chapters of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) and President of the San Diego News Photographers (SDNP). Dave has taught Photojournalism at Point Loma Nazarene University, he continually lectures and has been an instructor with Panasonic with its nationally advertised Digital Photo Academy.
